Healing A Broken Heart

I have recently learnt to sit at the feet of Jesus with my broken heart. The idea is not to pretend that the pain I feel isn't there, try to medicate it with pleasurable experiences or to dispose of it unto unsuspecting people.

Instead, I allow my pain wash through my body as I speak to Jesus about all the hurt I feel. In this place I find my rhythm, I find my joy, I know an inexplicable peace. There is nothing more that I seek or want besides just being with Jesus. Basking in his goodness and awesomeness and allowing Him space in my heart both to soothe and to heal.

The pain you feel from a broken heart has a way of leaving you feeling numb and empty on the inside.  It leaves you so desperate that you are willing to hang on to anything to feel something. This makes you feel that the relief you desire will come from external sources and although some things do offer some relief, this will only be temporary and it does not lead healing your heart.

I understand that the idea that you should just sit with your pain might seem unappealing because your desire to feel relief creates the temptation to reach outside of yourselves. Yet, these outside sources are only capable of offering temporary relief and never the healing that is necessary.

You see what a broken heart does to you is that it becomes a pain in the soul that forces you into a state of need, a need strong enough to make you feel you need people or things to make you feel better.

The good news is that we have a saviour in Jesus who is able to heal the brokenness of our hearts. The Bible tells us in Psalm 147:3 " He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds. I can tell you that although I once lived with this excruciating pain from a broken heart, taking my pain to God in prayer and sitting with Him has brought me healing. I believe that this can be your testimony too if you give your broken heart to Him.

When you turn your pain to Jesus what happens is that you will have in Him a source of living water that keeps you nourished and full always. Having your pain turned to Jesus means that the fountain of water that your soul needs to find healing is seated within you.

Sitting with Jesus in my pain gave me the heart reset from the pain of rejection that left me feeling unworthy for many years. During those times, no one was able to carry the weight of the type of pain that I felt and it was unfair to give it to anyone. So, this need birthed my of practice of taking it to Jesus.

It is quite miraculous to think that the God of all wonders and grace will choose your heart for his home. Revelations 3:20 says Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him and him with me. So, Jesus sits at the doors of our hearts and if we would open the door to him he will come in. Allowing him entry in to our hearts means we gain access to the power he has to heal our brokenness.

Although life might not immediately become perfect, one thing is for sure, whenever you feel beaten by life, you know where to turn. Taking your pain to Jesus also means that you don't have to take your pain to anyone but the one who heals, since no one but Jesus can heal a broken heart. All the other sources you reach to outside of ourselves cannot bring you healing instead they create new painful experiences. Jesus is the only saviour that can heal our broken hearts.

For me, this meant sitting in the presence of God as many times a day as I needed to. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. (For you, it could be taking a walk or listening to worship songs). What matters the most is that you choose not to reach to all the things you would normally reach to and instead give that space to Jesus and allow him in.

Practically, I always wondered how Jesus could heal a broken heart since the pain could not be seen. But I had faith in my heart's repair and I knew that all I needed was to touch the helm of the garment of Jesus.

I am writing this to you now to let you know that the emptiness in my soul is now gone. My soul has been healed and restored. I honestly do not know the point where it happened, but I know what it felt like to be empty and I know what it feels like now to feel full and perfect in the love of Jesus. My prayer is that you will look unto Jesus for your healing and restoration too.
